In 1939 Dr Cecil Madigan led his party of nine men and nineteen camels into the trackless and waterless Simpson Desert on an exciting mission never before attempted. For weeks they battled huge sand dunes, on their way from Andado to Birdsville. Lack of feed for the camels caused great concern before the party reached their destination. After resting for a few days at Birdsville, Madigan turned his party south-west around the shores of Lake Eyre to rejoin the railway at Marree.
